Chapter Eleven: Heads will roll

Meredith jolted upright as she woke, her eyes opened wide as she composed herself in the chair. She lifted her head, rubbed her face and yawned, glancing at the clock in the security office, which showed 2.22am. Then she remembered where she was. Amazingly, she had only managed to sleep for about twenty minutes, but it seemed like much longer. She wiped the sleep from her eyes again and studied the television monitors, all of which were still deserted of anyone in the building.

Meredith stretched her arms and decided she needed to seriously consider her options. She knew that she couldn’t stay in this room all night. She had no police officers or staff to help her and everyone who she met disappeared off someplace without a trace. Megan was missing and Clarissa was dead. Her mum couldn’t be reached by phone … the phone … she thought suddenly. Meredith quickly reached for the security phone on the desk and dialled out to her home number, but once again she received the ‘not recognised’ reply on the number. She then rang Megan’s house, followed by Clarissa’s house, both had the same unrecognised number message. She didn’t understand, she knew their numbers off by heart so it wasn’t a case of getting their numbers wrong. Next Meredith tried to ring the police on 999. The line rung for a second then offered her options of the various services, when she finally got through to a lady on the other end, she gave the name of the place, Aston Hall on the Cleveland Pass, and then proceeded to tell the woman about the murder of her friend.

‘Please send someone quickly, there has been a murder outside of Aston Hall Manor in Fairbank Forest, two officers have gone missing already!’

The lady on the phone was alarmed and checked her database, she confirmed that no squad car had been sent out to that location.

‘I’m sorry dear, any requests for the Cleveland area would come through ourselves at dispatch, we haven’t sent any police units to that address.’

After a few minutes confirming more details with Meredith, the woman agreed that she would send out a unit to the property. Meredith felt better as she hung up the phone, at least now she could stay put and wait for backup, even if it meant she had to hide the whole time. Sitting back into the chair she spun around to monitor the security television screens carefully, diligently examining for any signs of life. What had happened to everyone she wondered? And why hadn’t the dispatch team got any records of sending out officers Luke and Natalie?

And then she saw something strange.

From the security screens, she saw that in the middle of the large reception area a black blurry object laid across the floor. Something that wasn’t there a minute ago. Whatever it was, it wasn’t moving and definitely wasn’t there when she had fallen asleep. Climbing up on the desk, Meredith got closer to the television screen to get a better look at whatever it might have been.
